GENERAL SAFETY RULESWoodworking can be dangerous if safe and proper operating procedures are not followed. As with all machinery, there are certain hazards involved with the operation of the product. However, if normal safety precautions are overlooked or ignored, personal injury to the operator may result. Safety equipment such as guards, push sticks, hold-downs, featherboards, goggles, dust masks and hearing protection can reduce your potential for injury. But even the best guard wont make up for poor judgment, carelessness or inattention. Always use common sense and exercise caution in the workshop. If a procedure feels dangerous, dont try it. Figure out an alternative procedure that feels safer. REMEMBER: Your personal safety is your responsibility. This machine was designed for certain applications only. If you have any questions relative to a particular application, DO NOT use the machine until you have first contacted Delta to determine if it can or should be performed on the product. BTW, are you sure that's a Unisaw. It's a tad cumbersome to install, but once done it works great. It rises, falls, and tilts with the blade, and is the only aftermarket riving knife I know of. Works for me.Dr. Durdy Olman, Phd. (BS)When the board reaches the back of the saw table, you can see the kerf well enough to tell if it is going to draw together. At this point, I drop the wedge into the kerf to minimize the pinch. Sometimes I do it whether it needs it on not. The likelihood is determined by the species, dryness, grain pattern, and how you hold your teeth. Amongst other things.Dr. Durdy Olman, Phd. (BS)Amongst other things. I'll get saw dust on them and it will hurt when I put them back in! I've made a few videos What about reaching over or around a spinning saw blade while trying to insert a wedge, is that a concern.

A correctly installed splitter would enable you to concentrate on the ripping operation and not become sidetracked with the thought of inserting a wedge into the saw kerf. Regards GordWhat about reaching over or around a spinning saw blade while trying to insert a wedge, is that a concern. Regards Gord Definitely a better mousetrap IMHO. Thanks We are getting a little off subject.. I think I gave an answer to your question in my first reply. It may not suit everyone's way of doing things but it works well for me. Most of my ripping is boards 4' long or less. On my DeWalt TS, the splitter tilts but does not go up and down with the blade. As I use the TS for other things, (work bench), the splitter gets in the way. I'll post a pic or two in a couple hours. Now 7.00a.m. Eastern Time.Dr. Durdy Olman, Phd. (BS)You'll notice only 1 ZCI (10 years old) has a slot for the splitter. Shows how much I use the splitter..... I'll not recommend this procedure for anyone who would rather use the splitter, but if I pay attention to what I'm doing, I feel pretty safe. The kerf actually did close up but the wedge worked... The saw is 3hp, single phase 230V, right tilt. The old saw I’m on now is left tilt and does everything I need it too (except cut parallel to the fence) Mostly woodworkers over there and plenty of knowledge -and opinions- on table saws, and many unisaw owners. Also try their Advanced Search. I'll definitely head over to the Knots forum with this one. Both are 1970-era Rockwells. I think they're a pretty good saw. There is a slight advantage with a left-tilt (less likely to trap cut-offs when ripping at 45 degrees) but I wouldn't pass up a right-tilt for that reason. You can move the fence over on a right tilt saw if you must for narrow bevel rips. Also the blade points away from your hand when using the rip fence (again, unless the fence is moved over).Notice this presumes the fence is to the right of the blade.
