This manual contains information on lubrication, adjustments, maintenance, and controls as well as a complete parts list with exploded view diagrams for this Delta wood planer. Overview I have collected this information for many years and have found the information they contain to be priceless in using and setting up the machines properly. I believe this manual will be a valuable resource of knowledge that will provide a lot of helpful information that is often hard to find. My manuals are not photocopies. I maintain a high standard of quality in my reproductions. Most of the manuals I reproduce look better than their originals. I have professionally digitally edited every page, and removed stains, wrinkles and handwriting. All of the manuals are printed on thick white paper to withstand shop wear and tear; they are then comb bound with heavy cover pages so they lie flat on the workbench. Replace a few inexpensive small knives instead of a large planer knife if you happen to hit a nail or staple or when dull.

I don't use the depth stop at all, I have a cheap imported digital caliper that I use and generally I can plane to within a couple of thousandths without trying too hard. I find that this is useful when using the Kreg jig for pocket screwing the face frames. If the stock isn't pretty much all the same thickness you don't get a nice flush face frame, so in my view accurate plaing is a must. Once in a while I do get a snipe even swith the cutterhead locked but it doesn't happen enough to really be a problem. Light cuts, and good support of the board well on the outfeed side seem to do a good job on killing snipe. One thing I REALLY don't like is the dust chute accessory. Also, the thing interferes when planing thinner stock. Pretty good machine, but Delta screwed up on that part - and it's too expensive, to boot. In my view you can't really run a planer without dust collection (the chips end up geting embedded in the board) so I don't see why a chute isn't included wth the machine.I have started using the Powertec knives, which seem to perform the same but cost less. Feed is iffy, sometimes requiring help to get the board through. Snipe has continued to be an issue, and the cutterhead lock doesn't really make a difference. The infeed and outfeed table adjustments seem to have the greatest effect on both snipe and feed. The cheap wrench Delta provides to loosen the torx button head screws that hold the knives in snapped on the second blade change, and I need to replace a few screws because the torx head is very shallow and has gotten rounded a little after much use. I could go on, but the bottom line is that this machine planes.I imagine none of the portable planers will compete with a traditional cast iron machine, but I would have expected better from Delta. Next time, I will try a different brand. The original blades on my Delta planer were terrific, lasting a very long. These planed perhaps 10% of the feet of wood that the originals did before becoming dull.

Jonathan Derow 1.0 out of 5 stars When I received my blades (in a Chinese package), I complained to the seller, who immediately refunded more than 50% of the price. While I appreciate the quick resolution of my complaint, these blades should be advertised as what they are, NOT as Delta blades.I've planed quite a bit of red oak and had generally good results. I haven't seen any scored wood but then again I'm planing nice clean S2S stock. I try to avoid planing construction lumber but sometimes I do, to make a jig or clamping fixture. That wood is soft but kills the blades faster. I think it's a combination of the fact that it isn't very dry and also there's a lot of dirt and crud on typical construction lumber that you don't see on nice hardwood. I've had this planer for about 4 months and I'm still on the first side of the first set of knives. I'm sure you can kill the blades quick if you brutalize the machine but at least in my application - general woodworking using hardwoods mostly - I don't see any problems. After all, it's an inexpensive little planer.I find the zero depth gizmo to be a pain, but I do use it. I have to fiddle with it a little too much to get it to stay down. But, even so it is definitely nice to know where the blades are.

UPDATE: 1) as I run lots of material, the poor blade life is a pain.Oh, and by the way, following the recommendations of other reviewers, i waxed my in and out feed tables some time ago,.Wasn't planing anything rough, just some maple and sapele. I'm glad the blades are reversible but I had hoped to get a couple years out of each side given this was high speed steel.Initially they cut great. Glassy smooth, mirror finish, etc. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to last very long. It only took a couple of passes before the knives turned to garbage. I'm now on my second set of knives. I planed 40 board feet of Cherry for a project and they're already dull with a large nick in the blade (perceivably from a tiny knot in one of the boards). I already have to turn them over now. The knives cut softwoods great. They cut hardwoods great for a few boards. Then you might as well be using your belt sander. I'm definitely going to upgrade to a different planer if these are the only knives available.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote. This video will walk you through the steps needed to change your Planer blades so you always get the best perform. I have a problem in the gearbox. The two shafts that go into the gearbox do not turn properly. They are binding up and feel broken. I have all belts and chains off to isolate the problem. My question is how do I get this gearbox apart. When I pulled the sprocket off of the left hand shaft, grease poured out. And by looking at the parts diagram, it looks as if this is going to be a very involved job. Myself I would study the parts diagram and try to figure out which of the parts should come out first to make it easier to remove the rest. I know that's not much help. Good luck with it, -WJA It didn't come with a gauge to set the knives. Where can I get one? There is a product called the Planers Pal that is sold through quite a few after market suppliers. Just Google it and you be able to locate what you need. Hope that helps, -WJA. It also describes information tools available at eReplacementParts.com. This video will walk you through the steps needed to change your Planer blades so you always get the best perform. Sadly, the part you are requesting we do not have listed. We strongly recommend you contact the manufacturer, as they would have this information in their system. Ask them for the part number you require and contact back to see if it is something we carry. We hope this helps! Though the two screws look alike and the same size, you have to look closely. Some have a thicker wide treads and some real tight. One (wider threads almost like sheet metal screws) is made to go into the plastic (ie, the shell) and the other (tight threads) is made to go into the steel or aluminum part of the motor. I nearly stripped the mount for attaching the shell to the metal body by using the one designed to go into the plastic. It didn't come with a gauge to set the knives. Many competitors sell low cost knives made from sub-grade M2-HSS or the even lower grade D2 high carbon steel. Grinding Finish: Our knives are held to strict manufacturing process controls which includes holding tight tolerances on the knife thickness. Width, length, and bow. We also surface grind the planer knives using Horizontal grinders to avoid scratches on the cutting edge resulting in a smoother wood finish and stronger cutting edge. Many competitors use Vertical grinding machines that allow the knives to be ground faster but leave grinding marks on the face of the knives which micro-serrate the cutting edge. See the photos' to the right and the enlarged view of the cutting edge of our and our competitors knives. Many experienced woodworkers will only use knives with a horizontal finish grind in order to achieve the smoothest wood finish.
