Fig. DD, shows the correct gauge to use depending on the cord length. The workpiece is positioned on the jointer with the narrow edge of the workpiece on the infeed table and the major flat surface of the workpiece against the fence, as shown in Fig. 2. Took about 30 minutes (probably should have taken less if I knew what I was doing) and boy did it make a huge difference. Had a small chip in my old knives for years but was too nevous about changing the knvives. So everytime I'd joint a piece of wood I either had to scrape or sand out the ridge left by the chip.Wow! now i know what the problem was- these knives cut so smoothly, they were easy to install and I have run alot of material over them in the last few months. No snipes, no tears. I should buy another set, you should too. These were a good price. Did not realize how dull my old knives were. These join very smoothly. The couple of times that I have needed to joint longer boards, I've been able to setup extension rollers to help. Super high amount of views. 11 sold, 989 available. I was able to find another jointer for a cheap enough price that allowed me to scrap the other jointer. Once I was able to get the screws out, I was able to replace the knives in the old jointer with these knives. and wow. they are excellent! I suspect they would fit on the current Porter Cable jointer as well. So far I've used these knives on oak, pine, and bamboo. All have been nice and smooth with shallow passes and provided me with an excellent finish to ease sanding later on. However they needed honing as the edge was not as sharp as they should be. Perfect replacement. Their price is half of what I paid and as soon as I saw the knifes I was amazed by the quality. Edges were quite sharp. Replaced the knives, adjusted the height and was back to joining boards for my grand daughter's crib in less than an hour. Painless replacement. To start viewing messages,I need everything lightweight and mobile to get up and down the stairs of my shop and I don't have a ton of floor space. Is this a decent unit for the money or should I pass. I can hold out and keep saving if need be for a better unit but also don't want to pass up a good buy. What is everyone's thoughts? I'm a little concerned that that the newer Delta has poor reviews. A plus of the Cutech is that it has the spiral cutterhead. Most of us prefer that to straight knives. I'm sure you know the limitations of these machines - accuracy and bed length. If you're primarily surfacing shorter boards, it may not be as big a deal.

I wouldn't want to try to flatten a long board on a bench top machine. If you want a jointer only for edge work, you could pass on the jointer and straighten edges on a router table, if you have one. I did that for a few years when I started and it works just fine. Regards, Mark Would this be a better choice. I was thinking I could build a stand for a bench top jointer and use my workbench as an outfeed table or is it better to have a longer bed. Thanks again! Jason You can get the tables co-planer with a lot of patience and shim stock. Heavier stock will tend to push the machine around but, a couple of clamps can take care of that. This is not the case for everyone. Having a small work space (small is relative) provides challenges. Fortunately there are tons of books, tips and videos on how to overcome. Certainly making your machines, jigs and tools do double-duty is one way of capitalizing on the space they require. Unlike your tablesaw which can do so many things, a jointer is specific to its task. Only you can really judge the better value when it comes to the floor space used by a jointer versus the hassle of pulling a bench model out every time you need to use it. Do you mean all the time, or once. The rigid machine that you refer to - if I am thinking of the right rigid 6” jointer, that is not a machine even two would want to move up and down a stairway on a regular basis. It’s certainly not known as a heavy or robust jointer, but something like that is not portable.I guess I should have been more clear. So I would recommend the Rigid or something similar in order to get the additional bed length. Having the workbench serve as an outfeed table is somewhat useful, but it won't ever be exactly coplanar with the jointer table. So that arrangement won't increase jointing capacity. But I often have to rip boards narrower than I prefer to get them to fit the jointer. I think you are likely to outgrow the benchtop machine over time.

Please get back to me with both the horsepower rating and the voltage and FLA if you can, and tell me what voltage you are going to hook up to. The blade set number that I came up with is 37-658 and they show that as qty 3 in one package. Login to post Hope this helps. You should have enough room between the tables to get the knives out, if not remove the stationary, outfeed table. There are four hex-cap screws on each knife that hold the clamp bar on. Remove them with an allen wrench or hex driver if you have one and take the clamp bar and knife out. Pay attention to which way the bevel is on the knife so you put them back on the same way. If the blades have never been turned, they are double sided and can be turned around so the opposite side is out. The knife and clamp bar are designed to go on only the right way. Make sure you get the hex-bolts on very tight. Do the other knife, replace the table and make a couple test runs to check allignment.Lost my manual somewhere and have only changed blades once. I have the magna planer setup for it and. There are a lot of delta jointers out there. In this way, you maintain proper tension across the cutterhead at all times. If you used a magna set and didn't score a line on the fence to locate the magnaset at the peak position of the knives' arc around the cutterhead, then you may wish to do this first with a fine point marker. That way you'll ensure that the magnaset is in the same position when you adjust each knife as it was for the others. But I do use the magnaset to hold everything in place while I tighten the screws down. I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. Otherwise, check the Delta publications section at this site. Bear in mind you might be able to download a copy of a similar model's manual that will provide most of the information you need for proper use and adjustment of yours. Otherwise consult the many fine reference books available that include sections on proper tune up and adjustment of jointers, from places like Fine Woodworking, Taunton Press, etc. etc. They'll have the basic information about changing knives, adjusting and shimming tables, etc. If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post.thanks! As a result the board has a convex edge (high in the middle). The tables are parallel and the outfeed table is flush with the. They can be honed or taken to a sharpening shop. The outfeed table could also be too high. I usually adjust the knives above the outfeed table. Needless to say the jointer needs to be unplugged while doing this. The board could also be convex to start with. To fix that problerm start jointing at the start of the convex part and not at the end of the board. Good luck, Frank You may be able to find parts for it at Grizzly.com They sell the Tiawan tools but have an extensive inventory parts and the quality of tools is better than the typical Tiawan tools. Just find a model that looks like yours and see if they have the parts. You can order them online. Don't tell them that it's not for a grizzly tool, they don't like to sell parts to ppl who didn't buy thier tools from them. Some of thier tools have been re-engineered. I've had good luck with thier parts and the tools I've bought from them. If it has a horsepower rating, just replace with the same horsepower. Please get back to me with both the horsepower rating and the voltage and FLA if you can, and tell me what voltage you are going to hook up to. But it shouldn't be too hard.

Try to find a reliable sharpening service in your area; someone who does saw blades and knives for the cabinet shops will have a source for tool steel and carbide and can make you a set of knives for your jointer. Just get tool steel. While it won't hold it's edge quite as long as carbide knives, it will take a sharper edge to begin with, and should last just fine if you don't run sand through it. If you have the original knives, hang onto them as they most likely can be resharpened to like new condition, and steel today ain't necessarily what it used to be. The critical factor is the height. You want them to be able to rest all the way down on the adjustable pistons without sticking up more than 10-15 thousands above the cutterhead. That will give you the most resharpenings from a set. You might want to invest in a magnaset to help with setting the knives in place. If you find a place that will return your funds if they don't, you might be able to order them online. These guys will carry them if you can't find someone nearer you: If I've answered your question or solved a problem, please take a moment to rate this posting.thanks!Tools are very important in masonry work. Having the right tools for a certain job make all the difference. Jointers come in many different sizes and shapes. Learn the various types and how to use them and you can make quick work of a difficult task. Use an e-jointer for narrower spaces between the stones. There is no handle on the e-jointer, making it easier to smooth and shape the joints between the stones. Whenever your hand is closer to the surface, you can exert more control. Get a bead jointer for raised masonry bricks. They are small, strong, simple tools that can chip off the excess of a joint that is sticking up off the brink. If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post.thanks! I need a manual. Answer questions, earn points and help others. Came with some new knives so thought I'd replace them. Isn't it enough to bring the blades up to exactly the height of the outfeed table. I'm not really sure where the feeler gauge is supposed to go anyway. Thanks guys, Scott There is a high side and a low side. Which side goes toward the blade. I ran a board and it made a loud sort of bang near the end. I stopped and inspected the blades and 2 now have a slight nick in them. I know, it can't go in backwards.but it can if you take the screws out completely to clean up rust etc and didn't notice the asymmetry when you took it apart. Scott I have not been to my shop to look at my jointer tonight yet,I will let you know if I am wrong. Mike. Make the final out-feed height setting with test runs. I believe the stick method is simply putting a cutoff on the outfeed table hanging over the cutterhead and adjusting until the knive just picks up and moves the stick. Google it for more info. I use a Oneway MultiGauge. Went with the method where you measure how far a blade drags a metal rule down the out feed table as you rotate the head by hand. Working great. Thanks all! Scott. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. I loosened the Lock Screw and tried turning the Hand Knob clock and counter-clockwise without effect. I applied some serious pressure to no avail. I 'tapped' the end of the outfeed table with a plastic Dead Blow hammer - no effect. I understand the Outfeed Table is supposed to be 'tight,' while it might also be adjustable using the installed Hand Knob as per the manual. In my case, I fear stripping the handle before I can move the out-feed table at all.

And the company was sold a while ago, so you might be seeing a few more of the parts for their machinery being discontinued. You might try to keep searching on line for the 1340166 lock lever. There were a lot of these jointers sold, so I would hope someone might still have this part for you. Good luck, -WJA Can any one tell me how to replace them? Thanks. At least I think that's what's going on. I'm getting a metal scraping on metal sound. I have taken the belt off and don't get the noise when I run the motor. I'm also not sure how to remove the cutter assembly from the jointer, so would appreciate help with that also. I am not sure how that Hand Knob is fastened to the shaft it is attached to and don't want to risk breaking and parts that might prove irreplaceable (this is an old jointer). Before I try loosening the lock nuts that hold the Gib(s) which would certainly loosen things up - then require careful resetting (and a helper according to the manual) - I thought to ask here in case there was some 'trick' I never heard of. I've used it with good results (no micrometer checking, however - just old eyeballs). Then, I saw how to set it up properly on YouTube and decided my Outfeed Table was a bit too high relative to the TDC of the cutter knives. I am hoping one or more of the members here have one of these and at least one of you has addressed this same or a similar issue successfully. You can spend hours adjusting it and end up in worse shape than you are now. Previous owner might have shimmed it so it can't go lower. If you really need to adjust it, mark your current location on front and back and try raising it a little to break the contact. Check for an obstruction. The ways may need to be cleaned. I finally got the outfeed table to move after loosening the gib set screws. I am not sure if the in and outfeed tables are in the same plane. I do know that, after I fixed it the first time, I was able to create shim stock if I ran a piece through enough times (one end got smaller than the other end). Thanks for the feedback and advice - leave well enough alone (unless you know how to fix it!( You can make a master bar set with some scrap mdf and some drywall screws if you don't have a long enough or straight enough straightedge. They say NOT to mess with the GIBS (as I did) as they were set at the factory (before milling, i'll bet). Oh, Lord, what have I done. It also describes information tools available at eReplacementParts.com. You can use a multimeter to test tool and appliance cords and switches, the two parts usually responsible for electri.

First is that the price is pretty high for the product, but I guess that's what you're going to find with an OEM replacement part. Second thing is that they could supply these with a sharpened edge on both sides so that you could just flip them over when they need replacement. However, this does not impact our recommendations.Few can do without the smooth, straight edges and faces they get from their jointers. We tested twelve 6-in.They are quieter and can handle longer boards. Most of us preferred the handwheels because they make fine adjustments easier. This is particularly important on the outfeed table. Better yet are models with handwheels on the front of the jointer instead of under the tables-they're really easy to get at. There are two styles of fences. One rides on a post (Photo A), the other is carried by a casting (Photo B). Most testers preferred the fences on castings. Most, but not all jointers, have positive stops at 45, 90, and 135 degrees (Photo C). A handle on top of the fence helps you adjust to different angles. Unfortunately, this handle is typically in the way when edge jointing. Fences that are higher and longer lend more support to the material. Jointer beds can become out of alignment because the cast iron warped after manufacturing or because of damage in shipping. One machine in our test had this problem and a call to the manufacturer resulted in a new machine. Be sure to check your jointer and call your dealer if there's a problem.

Also, longer beds are always better because they make it easier to handle the stock. As a rule of thumb, you can get good results jointing material that's twice as long as the jointer bed. Most users found that springs made it easier to reset the knives. However, four of our five top jointers had screws under the knives. Jack screws are easy enough to live with on a jointer with other great features. Closed-stand models are generally easy to assemble. The open-stand models take lots more time to put together—as much as an hour or two more. How much tweaking will you need to do before cutting wood. This is primarily determined by how well the knives were set at the factory. Only one jointer needed the knives completely reset before cutting wood. It's a matter of small tolerances. The most obvious symptom is that no matter how good your technique, you can't produce a straight edge. Here's how you can check your machine to make sure it's working right: Try to slip a feeler gauge under the straightedge, starting with the smallest gauge. If the tables are absolutely perfect, even the thinnest of gauges won't slip under the straightedge. Use progressively thicker feeler gauges until one won't slip under the straightedge. The thickness of the largest gauge that can slip under the straightedge is the amount your bed is off. Repeat the process placing the straightedge diagonally across the beds to check for twist. The quality of machining, or lack of it, is a major factor in whether the beds are parallel. Adjust the fence so its face is tight to the square at one end. Move the square down the fence, looking for light between the fence and the blade of the square. If there's a gap, a feeler gauge will tell you how big it is. Gaps bigger than.003 in. could give you a problem. There wasn't much packing grease to clean off, so job readiness was great. We liked the front-mounted handwheels and the smooth-operating fence. Fit and finish on all the parts was great.

If you need explicit instructions to set up tools, this tool may be a problem because assembly instructions consist only of an exploded view of the tool. If you have a little familiarity with jointers though, you'll be okay. The fence is great. It's significantly longer and taller than most. The handles on the fence are not in the way when edge-joining. Woodworkers with bad backs will also like the high switch placement. You won't have to bend over every time you want to turn the tool on and off. Assembly was very easy. The fence has a unique rack and pinion system to move it across the bed. While this does make moving the fence easy, it also makes the tool stand farther away from a wall than most jointers, creating a bigger footprint. If you're very short on floor space, you may not like this tool. This makes the lever easier to use than other lever-style jointers. Assembly was straightforward, thanks to a well written and illustrated owner's manual. The castings on the Jet look identical to the General, except for the lack of bed extensions. Jet's Limited Edition jointer comes with two extra sets of knives. The fence is rigid and we were really impressed with the quality of machining on the beds. You'll need to wire in the switch, but the owners manual is great and covers this. We appreciated the lack of packing grease. The bed length comes from adding extensions to the infeed and outfeed tables. The assembly instructions say nothing about the extensions, but they're easy enough to put on. There aren't any instructions for the electrical switch either, and it needs to be installed. Again, it's easy to do if you're accustomed to light electrical work. As luck would have it though, while this test was in progress, I was in the middle of making some doors that needed to be rabbeted for glass. What the heck, says I, I'll do it on the jointer. Lo and behold, it made a believer out of me. It's easy to make wide rabbets and with great surface finish, too.

It'll take more than one pass to complete most rabbets, so if you're running lots of pieces, a tablesaw set up might still be the best bet. But for some applications, rabbeting on the jointer is the way to go. The testers ranged in skill level from novice to advanced, and gave us lots of feedback on what they liked and didn't like about the tools. All the AW editors also had a go at the jointers and submitted their opinions. Although many of the jointers looked a lot alike, there were small but significant differences that distinguish the best jointers. Open stand tedious to assemble. Rack and pinion fence works well, but takes up lots of space. No instructions. Rigid fence. Fence was tough to move. Infeed table had to be locked to prevent movement. Very smooth operation. Left chatter marks when face planing. Optional handwheel is available for infeed side. Ran smooth and quiet. Infeed lever was difficult to move. Overall finish was poor. Page 22 USING UNIFENCE AS CUT-OFF GAGE WHEN USING YOUR UNIFENCE AS A CUT-OFF GAGE, MAKE SURE IT IS PROPERLY SET UP AS DESCRIBED HERE. The Unifence can be used as a cut-off gage when cross cutting a number of pieces to the same length. A When using the unifence as a cut-off gage, it is very important that the rear end of the fence be positioned so the work piece is clear of the fence before it enters the blade. When using the fence as a cut-off gage, position the fence (A) to the front as shown in Fig. Page 23 table, after which the work is lifted and brought along the outside edge of the fence. The cut-off stock remains on the table and is not touched until the saw blade has stopped, unless it is a large piece allowing safe removal. When ripping boards longer than three feet, use a work support at the rear of the saw to keep the workpiece from falling off the saw table. 3. If the ripped work is less than 6 inches wide, a push stick should always be used to complete the feed, as shown in Fig. 60.
